On Sunday 2nd June 2019, Wales and South West England junior chess players competed against each other in a team event held in Chepstow. There were two age sections:
- Wales Under 14’s vs South West England Under 14’s
- Wales Under 11’s vs South West England Under 11’s
There were 12 boards in each age section, with players selected by EPSCA based on their performance at other events. Three players in the 2018/19 SJC Grand Prix season each played two rounds and contributed to the S W England score.
The Under 14’s match was won by S W England, winning the 1st round 7.5 – 4.5 and the 2nd round 7.0 – 5.0. Aron Saunders represented Somerset in this age section and scored a half point from his two games.The final score was:
Wales U14s 9.5 – 14.5 South West England U14s
Somerset were represented in the South West Under 11’s team by Ernie Fields and Kandara Acharya. Both Ernie and Kandara scored 1.5 points from their two games.
The match was very close, tied at 6 points each after round 1, and S W England narrowly won the second round 6.5 – 5.5. The final score was:
Wales U11s 11.5 – 12.5 South West England U11s
