The third Grand Prix of the season was held on an unseasonably warm and sunny day on the 24th March at St Johns School in Frome. This was the rearranged date following the postponement due to the snow and ice in early February. We welcomed over 90 children, competing across the 6 different age sections, including many children taking part in their first ever chess tournament.
All children played six games, and had the opportunity to compete against other children from across the county. For some, this was the final tournament to practice before competing in the Under 11’s county team national final.
Some of the children taking part compete in many other tournament, and as you might expect, there were some very tense games played and results decided with only a few seconds remaining on the clocks.
Firstly, congratulations to everyone taking place in their first chess tournament. It’s not easy to maintain concentration in six games. No matter how many games you won, drew or lost, we hope you enjoyed the day and see you again at an upcoming event.
And, congratulations to the winners of each age section and to those winning trophies and medals. Full results have been added to the league tables so that you can see how this affects the current standings. With only one more grand prix to take place, the competition for the Top 4 places in each age section is close. As a reminder, if you finish in a Top 4 place you will receive an invite to the Finals day taking part in June 2019; where the age section winner will be decided.
